Tungsten Wire

Tungsten wire is made by forging and drawing tungsten bars, which has various significant physical properties, including high strength, high melting point, good conductivity, high thermal stability, as well as high density and low coefficient of expansion.

Tungsten filament wire is made by sintered pure tungsten powder into strips through powder metallurgy method, and then drawing it.

In the smelting process, small amounts of potassium, silicon, and aluminum oxides are usually added, and this type of tungsten wire is called doped tungsten wire or non sagging tungsten wire.

Features:

Pure tungsten wire has excellent characteristics such as high melting point (the highest among all pure metals), high electrical resistivity, high strength, and low vapor pressure.

Its resistivity increases with temperature and remains stable at room temperature.

Surface of our tungsten wire is smooth without burrs, cracks, scratches, and other phenomena. During the production process, graphite emulsion will be coated. And after removing the graphite emulsion, it will have a metallic luster.

Application:

Tungsten wire filament is widely used as luminescent material in electric light sources such as incandescent lamps and halogen lamps.

It is also used for manufacturing high-speed cutting alloy steel, optical instruments, chemical instruments, etc.

Specific types of tungsten wires, such as pure tungsten wires, are suitable for manufacturing long filaments, impact resistant filaments, spiral coil filaments, electrodes, etc..

Tungsten wire mesh is widely used in various machinery, electrical appliances, air conditioners, filters, vacuum equipment, etc..

Storage and maintenance:

Tungsten wire should be stored in clean, dry container with a temperature not exceeding 28 ℃ and humidity not exceeding 60%, and strictly isolated from chemicals to prevent surface oxidation.

Tungsten Wire Application:

Type Name Kind Applications
WAL1 Nonsag tungsten wires L Used in making single coiled filaments, filaments in fluorescent lamps and other components.
B Used in making coiled coil and filaments in High power incandescent bulb, stage decoration lamp, heating filaments, halogen lamp, special lamps etc.
T Used in making special lamps, exposition lamp of copy machine and lamps used in automobiles.
WAL2 Nonsag tungsten wires J Used in making filaments in incandescent bulb, fluorescent lamp, heating filaments, spring filaments, grid electrode, gas-discharge lamp, electrode and other electrode tubes parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What are the main applications of tungsten wire?

A1: Tungsten wire is primarily used in:

  • Filaments for incandescent and halogen lamps
  • Electrodes in TIG welding and discharge lamps
  • Heating elements in high-temperature furnaces
  • Medical imaging and electronic vacuum components

Q2: What is the purity level of FOTMA tungsten wire?

A2: FOTMA supplies tungsten wire with a purity of ≥99.95%, meeting requirements for high-conductivity and high-melting-point applications.

Q3: What types of tungsten wire are available (WAL series)?

A3: The WAL series includes several types based on potassium content and elongation properties:

  • WAL1 (L/B/T) – Potassium content ranges from 50–90 ppm, ideal for non-sag applications such as lamp filaments
  • WAL2 (J) – Potassium 40–50 ppm, used for stability in higher-temperature environments

Note: Potassium is not treated as an impurity, but an intentional doping element.

Q4: What are the diameter and tolerance specifications?

A4: Tungsten wire is available in ultra-fine diameters from 0.018 mm and up, with tight tolerances for precision applications. Surface finish can be black, cleaned, or electro-polished based on requirements.

Q5: Can I order custom tungsten wire specifications?

A5: Yes. FOTMA offers full OEM customization, including:

  • Coil or straight-length form
  • Specific diameters and mechanical properties
  • Heat-treated or surface-finished versions

Tailored to your production or R&D needs.
